MI Annual Dinner

The annual Mariners International Dinner for 2010 at the Civil Service Club, London, on 30th October

Jim Lawrence with Leslie Morrish

Sally Spencer reports our chairman finally managed to persuade Jim to come and speak at our Annual Dinner. Sally had sailed with Jim when Mariners chartered the Thames barge Repertor for a weekend and anticipated the treat in store from a skipper with a vast knowledge of Thames sailing barges, but also a great personality with a huge sense of humour. More than 50 members and friends gathered to listen.

Jim took his first job on board at the age of 16. In those days it was the barge skipper who employed his hands rather than the company who operated the barge, and Jim was given the first task of getting a new pennant to fly from the mast top. It was no easy feat and eventually Jim managed it but it gave the skipper a good insight as to how competent, imaginative and capable his new signing would be and whether he had the stomach for the heavy work that lay ahead.

See Windjammer 2010 No. 3 for a full report of Jim's presentation.

Today Jim runs a successful sail making, rigging and chandlery business based in Brightlingsea, Essex.
